Countdown to Christmas begins in Limerick

The magic of Christmas will descend on the streets of Limerick City later next week when the Christmas lights are officially switched on at Bedford Row.

Santa Claus will perform the official switch-on at 4.30pm during a fun-filled event on Sunday, 15th November. 'Light Up Limerick' is being organised by Limerick City and County Council, in association with Limerick Chamber of Commerce.

Snow falling over those gathered beneath the Christmas tree will herald the start of what local businesses hope will be a busy Christmas shopping period while street entertainment and an outside broadcast by Live 95FM will add to the festive atmosphere.

A comprehensive programme of events is currently being prepared and will be launched on www.limerick.ie/christmas later next week.

Launching the events were, Mayor of Limerick Cllr. Liam Galvin, Liam Dwane, Brown Thomas, Aoife Hannon, Costa Coffee and Celia Holman Lee. Picture: Alan Place/Fusionshooters.

Models from the Celia Holman Lee agency modelling Hollywood star Maureen OÕHara clothes at the Foynes Flying Boat and Maritime Museum.

The Golden Age of Hollywood lit up the Foynes Flying Boat and Maritime Museum as the fashion and style of Hollywood star Maureen OÕHara was revealed to the public for the first time in a spectacular gala event.

The event, the first in a line of fundraisers to construct the new Maureen OÕHara Blair wing of the museum, was officially opened by the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Patrick OÕDonovan.

Minister OÕDonovan gave his commitment to supporting the project that is expected to significantly increase the 60,000 visitor numbers to the poplar west Limerick tourist attraction.

Owing to the generosity of Ms OÕHaraÕs grandson Conor Fitzsimons, the worldÕs largest collection of Ms OÕHaraÕs memorabilia will go on display in Foynes on completion of the new phase of the museums structure.

The star studded cast of the SPAR Panto, Beauty and the Beast, were out in force today to launch this year’s show which runs at University Concert Hall, Limerick from December 19th. Set against the stunning backdrop of King John’s Castle in Limerick’s Mediaeval Quarter the fairytale cast, in full costume, looked very much at home.

Limerick comedian Karl Spain, most recently seen in RTÉ’s Celebrity Operation Transformation, joined other newcomers to this year’s panto at University Concert Hall -Aoibhin Garrihy and Tom O’Mahony - together with the host of long serving familiar faces which already include RTÉ’s George McMahon, Richie Hayes and Leanne Moore.
