Second-hand charity shops can be a treasure trove of interesting fashion and accessories. They are a great way of reusing and upcycling unwanted items and also helping to reduce the number of clothes that are thrown out and end up in the landfill.
In order to raise the profile of second-hand retail charity shops and highlight their great value, Limerick City and County Council has joined with ADAPT Charity Shop on Sarsfield Street in the city centre and Limerick’s Live 95fm for a unique ‘romantic’ challenge called the Romantic GladRags 95 minute Challenge.
The Romantic GladRags 95 minute Challenge is to find outfits for a couple which will then be worn on a romantic evening out.
Couples will have 95 minutes to shop in the ADAPT shop for the outfits (shoes excluded) on Saturday 18 February 2017 with a total budget of €95.
The prize is a horse-drawn carriage ride through the city (with the runners-up), dinner for two along with an overnight stay in No 1 Pery Square on Saturday 18 February 2017. Runners-up will get an evening meal for 2 in the Savoy Hotel Restaurant also on Saturday 18 February.
Mayor of Limerick City and County Cllr Kieran O Hanlon said: I am delighted to support this initiative. This romantic “95-minute Glad Rags Challenge” aims to highlight the importance of re-use in a fun an interesting way. I would like to thank Limerick’s Live 95fm, Celia Holman Lee, Richard Lynch and everyone at the ADAPT Shop on Sarsfield Street for coming on board.”
Sinead McDonnell, Environmental Awareness Officer with Limerick City and County Council said: “The council is always looking for new ways to highlighting the importance of Waste Prevention. It is always better to reuse clothing that is in good condition than to recycling them. I hope it will encourage more people into Limerick charity shops to find fabulous pre-loved fashions for themselves.”
Fashion Icon Celia Holman Lee added: “I will be looking for individual styles and interesting accessories and that our couple our beautifully dressed for their romantic evening out!”
House Limerick’s Richard Lynch also said:” I can’t wait to meet the couples and see them in their Glad Rags. What a fun way to promote reuse.”
Frances Quinn from ADAPT Charity Shop said: The “95-minute Glad Rags” Challenge is a great way for our ADAPT Shop to showcase our range of fashion and accessories.
How the Romantic Glad Rags Challenge will work:
- The promotion will be posted on Limerick Live 95FM’s Facebook page on the 13th February 2017 and will look for three couples to go into the ADAPT Charity shop and dress themselves for their Romantic night out on the 18th February 2017.
- On Saturday 18th February each couple will meet at House and start their challenge. They will meet Richard Lynch and have a chat and a cup of coffee. They must arrive with hair and make-up done. Once the couples leave House the clock starts and they have 95 minutes to get to ADAPT Shop, search for outfits, purchase outfits, dress and make their way back to House.
- They will then present themselves to fashion icon Celia Holman Lee who will pick the best-dressed couple. Photographs will be taken.
- The three couples will then be taken on the horse-drawn carriage through the city and the runners-up dropped off to the Savoy Hotel for dinner, with the winners continuing on to No 1 Pery Square for their romantic dinner and overnight stay.
- There is a €95 limit on the cost of the outfits and accessories (per couple). All accessories with the exception of shoes must be chosen from the ADAPT Shop.
- All couples must bring bags with them ready for an overnight stay in the event that they win. Runner-up couples will have to make arrangements to manage their own overnight bags once the winning couple has been announced.
- Limerick’s Live95fm will video the whole experience and take photographs for social media.
